n October 5th, thirty five teachers from all over Pakistan gathered to receive cash awards, medals and certificates for ’Best Teacher’ as part of commemorations for International Teachers’ Day last week. The 35 winners include 16 female teachers and 19 male teachers. In recent years Pakistan’s Ministry of Education has honored selected outstanding teachers as part of its efforts to encourage excellence in teaching. The 2006 awards include a cash prize of Rs.30,000 for each teacher - co-sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and UNESCO. The ceremony was held at the National Library of Pakistan, Islamabad.
