On June 16, 2007 UNESCO announced this year's winners for the Literacy Awards. The award recipients come from China, Senegal, Nigeria, Tanzania and the United States. This UNESCO initiative is concieved to recognize the efforts made in the fight against illetracy. This year's theme was 'Literacy and Health', including literacy work, such as nutrition, family and reproductive health and health-related community development.
The US winner is the 'Reach Out and Read' organization, working on urban health centers, neighborhood clinics, hospitals and public health departments.
