Professor Bonnie Bassler of Princeton University Is Honored as 2012 L'Oreal-UNESCO Science Laureate

The L'ORÉAL-UNESCO For Women in Science partnership has announced the five exceptional women scientists from around the world who will receive the 2012 L'ORÉAL-UNESCO Awards in Life Sciences.

The 2012 Laureate for North America is Professor Bonnie Bassler, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Principal Investigator, Department of Molecular Biology at Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey. Professor Bassler is a world-renowned expert on how bacteria "talk" to each other using a chemical language in order to coordinate their behavior as a group. Professor Bassler was selected for her work in understanding chemical communication between bacteria and opening up new doors for treating infections.

UNESCO calls for nominations for the 2011 UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-Violence. The closing date for submissions is 9 September 2011 at midnight.

The Prize is awarded every other year to an individuals, institution or non-governmental organization that has made exceptional contributions and demonstrated leadership in the promotion of tolerance and non-violence.

The Prize was created in 1995 on the occasion of the United Nations Year for Tolerance and the 125th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, thanks to the generosity of the Indian writer and diplomat Madanjeet Singh, who is also UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador.

The Prize carries a monetary award of USD 100,000. Winners also receive a certificate highlighting the major contributions for which it is awarded. The awardees are officially recognized at a ceremony that is held at UNESCO Headquarters on the International Day for Tolerance, celebrated every year on 16 November, at which they are invited to deliver an acceptance speech.

Mónica González Mujica to receive UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2010

The Chilean journalist, Mónica González Mujica, a heroine of the struggle against dictatorship in her country, has been named laureate of the 2010 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize.

“Throughout her professional life, Mónica González Mujica has shown courage in shining the light on the dark side of Chile,” said the President of the jury, Joe Thloloe, Press Ombudsman of the Press Council of South Africa. “She has embodied the very spirit of the Award. She has been jailed, tortured, hauled before the courts but has remained steadfast.”

“Ms González is now ploughing her experience back to the younger generation through her work at the Center of Journalism and Investigation and her workshops on investigative journalism in various countries,” added Mr Thloloe.

Lula Wins UNESCO Peace Prize

The Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize is awarded this year to Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva, President of the Federal Republic of Brazil. The prize includes a gold medal and $150,000. Henry Kissinger is the President of the Jury that selects the prize winner. The prize is to be awarded in a ceremony on July 7th.

Otorgan Premio José Martí a Atilio Borón

La Organización para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura de las Naciones Unidas (UNESCO) anunció en París que el Premio José Martí 2009 fue otorgado al argentino Atilio Borón, investigador en Ciencias Sociales.

El jurado internacional destaco los aportes de Borón al estudio y la promoción del pensamiento de José Martí. Borón, reconocido como una de las más sobresalientes figuras de la teoría política contemporánea es profesor en la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad de Buenos Aires e investigador en el Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas de Argentina.Borón tambien fue secretario ejecutivo del Consejo Latinoamericano de Ciencias Sociales (CLACSO).
